CURRENT PHASE: Phase 1 — DevOps & Platform Engineering Contractor
This brief is a living document. Positioning evolves as phases progress. The spine — arc, evidence base, differentiator — is phase-independent. Update the phase indicator and affected sections only.
Tone of Voice
Inspired by William Zinsser’s On Writing Well. These principles govern all content rendered from this brief — CV, LinkedIn, bios, proposals, website copy. If it sounds like a committee wrote it, rewrite it.
Clear, not clever. Say what happened. Say what I did. Say what it means. In that order. No abstractions where a concrete fact will do. “Built a DevOps platform from zero serving thousands of developers” — not “spearheaded the strategic implementation of a transformative developer enablement ecosystem.”
Short sentences do the heavy lifting. Long sentences explain. Short sentences land. Vary the rhythm. One idea per sentence. One point per paragraph. If a paragraph makes two points, it’s two paragraphs.
Active voice, first person. I built. I embedded. I delivered. Not “was responsible for” or “played a key role in.” The passive voice is where accountability goes to hide. I don’t hide.
No clutter. Every word earns its place or gets cut. “Utilise” is “use.” “Facilitate” is “help.” “Leverage” is almost always “use.” Buzzwords signal that the writer has nothing to say. I have things to say.
Confident, not boastful. State the facts. The facts are strong enough. “98% reduction in time-to-solution” doesn’t need “I’m proud to say” in front of it. Let the work speak. Understatement is more credible than oversell.
Warm, not corporate. This is a person writing, not a consultancy’s marketing department. Contractions are fine. Personality is fine. The occasional dry observation is fine. What’s not fine is the dead, grey language of enterprise comms.
Specifics over generalities. Names, numbers, outcomes. “Nestlé” not “a global FMCG.” “98% reduction” not “significant improvement.” “CERN” not “a leading scientific institution.” Specifics build trust. Generalities build suspicion.
Core Positioning
Headline
DevOps & Platform Engineering Contractor. AI Native Software Engineering. Embedding with enterprise clients and making complex technology work in production.
Subheadline
DevOps and Platform Engineering contractor. CI/CD, Kubernetes, infrastructure as code. Enterprise delivery at CERN, Nestlé, NatWest, BBC Worldwide, Financial Times, and Dematic. Author of AI Immigrants. Writing Spec Driven Development — the book on what comes next.
Differentiator
Most DevOps contractors are infrastructure specialists who’ve never run a client engagement, or consultants who’ve never shipped a pipeline to a customer’s production environment. I’ve done both. The pattern is always the same: embed with the client, build the platform, transfer capability, leave it better than I found it.
There’s a second pattern. I’ve been early to every wave. XP and TDD in the late nineties. Agile in the early 2000s. Cloud-native and IaC in the 2010s. DORA metrics when Accelerate was still new. AI-native engineering now. When I say it’s the next paradigm, that’s not hype. It’s pattern recognition backed by a career of being right about what comes next.
Market Positioning
DevOps and Platform Engineering contractor with AI governance depth — but not the kind who helps you set up chatbots. I embed with enterprise clients and make platforms, pipelines, and developer tooling work at scale. Most technical contractors can’t run the programme. I can. The AI governance expertise and SDD methodology point where I’m heading: AI-native engineering.
Why DevOps & Platform Engineering Contracting
The immediate strategy is contract-based DevOps and Platform Engineering work. This is not a fallback — it is the strategy that the constraints demand. It aligns with the strongest parts of my career, leverages existing certifications, and operates through a structure that provides jurisdictional flexibility.
Hard constraints: Remote-first. Outside IR35 if UK-connected. Invoiced through Irish company. No direct payroll in data-sharing jurisdictions. Good rates.
The Evidence Base
Every major engagement in my career maps to DevOps, Platform Engineering, and developer experience transformation:
| Engagement | Delivery |
|---|---|
| Nestlé | Embedded with global engineering teams. Built DevOps platform from zero serving thousands of developers across India, Spain, and UK. Migrated Jenkins into AKS, optimised CI/CD pipelines, implemented Terraform IaC governance. Transferred capability for long-term sustainability. |
| Dematic | DevOps transformation for global warehouse automation leader (6,000+ FTEs, Amazon as client). GitLab and Azure-based CI/CD platform. Reduced proposal turnaround from 8 weeks to 1 day and simulation times from 11 hours to 24 minutes — 98% reduction in time-to-solution. Architected reusable pipeline templates, Terraform IaC, Helm-based K8s deployments. |
| CERN | Kubernetes and CI/CD architectural review for Large Hadron Collider control systems. Delivered recommendations that shipped to production infrastructure. |
| NatWest | Enterprise AI-assisted development pilot. Assessment framework across Java, Python, and Node.js. Board-level AI adoption recommendations. Enterprise AI in a regulated environment. |
| BBC Worldwide | £10m+ programme portfolio. Cross-functional delivery at scale. Embedded with digital product teams across bbcgoodfood.com, topgear.com, and Global iPlayer. |
| Financial Times | Platform delivery during transformative period leading to £844M Nikkei acquisition. Embedded with engineering teams during rapid digital transition. |
| Gilead Sciences | Pilot-to-production transition for Real World Evidence data platform. Architecture, governance, automation, and training. |
| Lunar Zebro / TU Delft | Coached 50-person student team building Europe’s first student-led moon rover. 75% reduction in trial-and-error development through CI/CD pipeline implementation. |
| HelloFresh | Coached teams through scaling to €1.5B IPO. |
What I Bring
| Domain | What It Requires | My Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Platform Engineering | Build and operate internal developer platforms. CI/CD, infrastructure as code, Kubernetes, developer tooling. | Nestlé global platform build. Dematic CI/CD transformation. CERN K8s review. SpecMCP open-source. GitLab ×9, GitHub ×4 certified. |
| DevOps Delivery | Pipeline architecture, automation, migration, modernisation. Ship outcomes, not slide decks. | 98% time-to-solution reduction at Dematic. Jenkins-to-AKS migration at Nestlé. Terraform IaC governance. Reusable pipeline templates. |
| Delivery Management | Run the programme. Stakeholder management. Team building. Capability transfer. | 11 years client-embedded via Cprime. Built teams at Nestlé (India/Spain/UK) and Dematic (Ukraine). C-suite stakeholder management. £10m+ budgets. |
The critical addition most DevOps contractors lack: delivery management as a superpower. I can embed with a client, build the pipeline architecture, and run the programme that scales it across the enterprise. That combination is exceptionally rare.
The Arc: Early to Every Wave
Every phase of my career has operated at a higher level of abstraction than the last. And at every stage, I have arrived early — not following adoption curves, but riding the front of them.
| Phase | Era | Early Adoption Signal |
|---|---|---|
| Software Engineer | Mid-1990s | Writing code. Foundation layer. |
| XP, TDD, BDD, CI/CD | Late 1990s–2000s | Super early adopter of Extreme Programming, Test-Driven Development, and continuous integration. These practices were fringe. |
| Agile & Scrum | 2000s | Early adopter. Adopted agile methodologies in the early 2000s, years ahead of mainstream adoption. |
| Agile Transformation | 2007–2016 | Barclays, Heathrow, Pearson, Financial Times, BBC Worldwide, EY, McKinsey. Won UK Agile Award 2014. |
| Cloud & Containerisation | 2010s | Early adopter of cloud-native development and containerisation. Infrastructure as Code in the early 2010s. |
| DevOps & DORA Metrics | 2014–2020 | Nicole Forsgren’s Accelerate as a personal touchstone. DORA four key metrics as the governance framework. |
| Platform Engineering | 2020–2025 | Built Nestlé’s global platform. Dematic CI/CD transformation. CERN architectural review. DevEx before it had its own conference circuit. |
| AI Native Engineering | 2025 → | GitHub Copilot beta. Writing Spec Driven Development. Building SpecMCP. The next level of abstraction — and I’m early again. |
The pattern is the positioning. I don’t arrive at paradigm shifts after the conference circuit and the certification industry have packaged them up. When I say AI-native engineering is the next wave, that call comes with a thirty-year track record of being right about what comes next.
The Narrative
I embed with enterprise clients and make complex technology work in production. That’s the thread that runs through my career — and at every stage, I’ve arrived early.
In the late 1990s, I was doing Extreme Programming, Test-Driven Development, and continuous integration. I adopted Scrum in the early 2000s, then spent a decade turning those practices into organisational change at Barclays, Heathrow, Pearson, the Financial Times, BBC Worldwide, EY, and McKinsey. In the 2010s, cloud and containerisation arrived. I saw the chance to dissolve the wall between development and operations. Infrastructure as code, before anyone had settled on what to call it.
At Nestlé, I built a DevOps platform from zero — assembled a team across India, Spain, and the UK, served thousands of developers, transferred capability so it outlasted me. At Dematic, I was first through the door. Transformed CI/CD for a warehouse automation leader. Cut time-to-solution by 98%. Handed it to a nearshore team. At CERN, I reviewed Kubernetes architecture for the Large Hadron Collider. At NatWest, I piloted AI-assisted development in a regulated environment and delivered board-level adoption strategy. At BBC Worldwide, I ran the £10m+ digital portfolio. At the Financial Times, I rebuilt the platform during the period that ended with Nikkei’s £844M acquisition.
Now the abstraction layer is changing again. AI-native engineering is the next shift — the biggest yet. Spec Driven Development (sddbook.com) is my argument that agentic software delivery needs structure, specifications, and governance. Not prompts and hope. SpecMCP is the open-source tool that makes it enforceable. AI Immigrants was the first book — 70,000 words on AI governance and the EU AI Act.
I am researching how leading engineering organisations — from Spotify to Anthropic — are navigating this transition. The SDD book and the SpecMCP project position me at the centre of the AI-native engineering conversation while I continue delivering platform engineering and DevOps value on contract.
Strategic Vision
The hypothesis: DevOps and Platform Engineering contracting provides immediate income and continued enterprise credibility. In parallel, the SDD book, SpecMCP, and AI governance advisory build toward the longer-term play: AI Native Software Engineering consultancy, training, and advisory through Kevin Ryan & Associates. The contract work feeds real-world case studies into the book. The book feeds credibility back into the consultancy. The consultancy scales when the income floor is secured.
Tier 1: DevOps / Platform Engineering Contract — Primary Target
Remote DevOps or Platform Engineering contract, invoiced through Irish company. This covers monthly costs and stabilises the financial position. Target roles: Senior DevOps Engineer, Platform Engineer, CI/CD Architect, DevOps Consultant, Infrastructure Engineer.
Certifications in progress: Terraform Associate. AZ-104 (Azure Administrator). AZ-400 (Azure DevOps Engineer). These are table-stakes for the current market.
Tier 2: Kevin Ryan & Associates — Parallel, Growing
Expert network consulting (GLG, Guidepoint, Techspert) for AI governance advisory. SDD training and workshops sold through kevinryan.io. Short consulting engagements leveraging existing contacts and the DevOps Kanban LinkedIn group (5,500 members). This tier runs from day one at low cost.
Timeline
Immediate (0–6 months): Secure DevOps contract. Expert networks and SDD training running in parallel. Certifications completed. Hungarian digital nomad visa obtained.
Medium term (6–18 months): SDD book published, enriched by live case studies. Kevin Ryan & Associates generating revenue through training and advisory. Contract income stable or improved. Hungarian passport application in progress.
Long term (18+ months): Boutique consultancy positioned for AI Native Software Engineering adoption in enterprise. Multiple revenue streams: consulting, training, advisory, tooling (specmcp.ai), publishing. EU citizenship secured. Full strategic flexibility restored.
Phase Roadmap
Internal only. Not for external profiles. This maps the strategic intent behind positioning transitions. When a phase changes, update the phase indicator at the top of this brief and revise only the affected sections. The spine — arc, evidence base, differentiator, proof points — is phase-independent.
| Phase | Positioning | What Changes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | DevOps & Platform Engineering Contractor | Current. Headline, bios, keywords, and channel notes all optimised for DevOps/Platform Eng contract search. AI-native narrative runs underneath as “where I’m going.” |
| 2 | SDD Consulting & AI-Native Engineering | When contract income is stable. Headline shifts to AI-Native Engineering lead. SDD book published. Kevin Ryan & Associates generating training and consulting revenue. DevOps becomes the credibility layer, not the headline. |
| 3 | MLOps Specialisation | When SDD is established and MLOps book (mlopsbook.com) is in progress. Natural specialisation from DevOps into ML operations. Headline adds MLOps. Arc table gains MLOps row. New bio variants for ML engineering contexts. High-rate specialisation. |
| 4 | Kevin Ryan & Associates Boutique Consultancy | AI-Native + MLOps + AI Ethics consultancy. Books as published IP, methodology as product, enterprise client history as proof. Build toward acquisition by Cap Gemini, BCG, Deloitte or equivalent. ~5 year horizon. Brief becomes the consultancy’s brand bible. |
Proof Points

| Lunar Zebro / TU Delft | CI/CD pipeline for autonomous moon rover. 75% reduction in trial-and-error. First-of-kind aerospace-grade embedded testing framework. Published Cprime case study. |
| Distributed Equity License | Open-source AI licensing framework (distributedequity.org). Machine-readable licence with manifesto, protocol, and legal framework. Demonstrates applied AI ethics governance — not commentary, but a working artefact. Reinforces AI governance credibility. |
| Published Case Studies | Three published case studies across two publishers (Microsoft, Cprime). Named and quoted in all three. Dual attribution on Dematic from both vendor and consultancy — independently verified delivery outcomes. This is rare proof that the work happened and the results are real. |
Key Themes
These ideas recur across all channels. They make the positioning coherent regardless of format.
Enterprise DevOps and Platform Engineering with delivery depth. Not just a pipeline builder. I embed with clients, build the platform, run the programme that scales it, transfer capability. CERN, Nestlé, NatWest, Dematic, BBC, the FT.
AI-native engineering is the next shift. Software engineering keeps moving to higher levels of abstraction. AI-native engineering is next. The SDD book and SpecMCP put me at the front of this wave, just as I’ve been at the front of every previous one.
Early to every wave. XP and TDD in the late nineties. Agile in the early 2000s. Cloud-native and IaC in the 2010s. DORA metrics when Accelerate was still new. AI-native engineering now. This is a pattern, not a coincidence.
Spec-driven, not prompt-driven. AI-native engineering needs structure, specifications, and governance. SpecMCP and the SDD book argue the future is deterministic and enforceable, not ad-hoc and hopeful.
Technical fluency with delivery authority. I can build the pipeline architecture and manage the £10m programme budget in the same engagement. No translator needed between the build team and the boardroom.
Practitioner, not commentator. Building SpecMCP, writing the book, publishing the research, interviewing companies doing this work. This is not thought leadership from the sidelines.
Enterprise credibility. CERN, Nestlé, NatWest, BBC Worldwide, Financial Times, Dematic. Organisations where DevOps has to work at scale, under governance, with real consequences.
